Since April 2006, everyone in Scotland is entitled to a free NHS eye examination. For most people this will be carried out every two years, but there are many groups who may be seen more frequently. If you are in any doubt, please contact us and we will advise you how often you should be seen.

Here is a guide to how it all works:-

CATEGORY	FREQUENCY OF TEST
Under 16	Normally once a year, but maybe less if advised by optician
16 to 60	Every two years
Over 60	Every year
Patients with Diabetes, Glaucoma, family history of Glaucoma (if over 40)	Every year

HELP WITH THE COST OF SPECTACLES

There is still a facility to provide help with spectacles under the NHS. This comes in the form of a voucher, the value of which depends on your prescription. This voucher can be used towards the cost of spectacles or contact lenses. Not all opticians provide free spectacles in exchange for this voucher and, indeed, there is no obligation for them to do so. However, at LOOK OPTICIANS, we still provide the option of free spectacles for patients who qualify for a voucher. Don`t forget, you can trade up and get a nicer frame but still get your lenses free. Our staff will be able to give you advice on your entitlement and, in certain cases, can phone to find out what benefit you are in receipt of.

Here is a guide to how it all works:

CATEGORY	ENTITLEMENT
Under 16	Qualify for a voucher whenever there is a change in prescription. Can also get repair voucher in the event of loss or damage to specs
Full time student aged 16, 17 or 18	Qualify for a voucher whenever there is a change in prescription or every two years
In receipt of Income support Income based jobseekers allowance NHS tax credit exemption Guaranteed pension credit	Qualify for a voucher whenever there is a change in prescription or every two years
Not covered by any of the above	Can claim using form HC1. May get full help or partial help once form approved (HC2 or HC3)
